Amit Shah: Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday over the Ambedkar issue. On X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote that the Congress and its ecosystem believe their malicious lies can conceal their misdeeds of many years. He further wrote that if they think they can hide, especially, the disrespect shown to Dr Ambedkar by the Congress, they are mistaken. The people of India have repeatedly witnessed how a family-led party has employed every dirty trick to erase Dr Ambedkar&#8217;s legacy and humiliate SC-ST communities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">‘Congress’s list is quite long’</h2>



PM Modi wrote that the Congress&#8217;s list of insults against Dr Ambedkar is quite long. They defeated Ambedkar not once, but twice in elections. Pandit Nehru campaigned against him, making his defeat a matter of prestige. They did not bestow him with the Bharat Ratna. PM Modi stated that despite being in power for many years, they did little for Dalits and Adivasis.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What did Amit Shah say?</h2>



Union Home Minister Amit Shah observed that invoking Ambedkar&#8217;s name had turned into a fashionable trend in contemporary times. He reportedly remarked that people frequently repeated Ambedkar&#8217;s name, adding that if they invoked God&#8217;s name with the same fervour, they might attain heaven for seven lifetimes. The Congress strongly criticised his statement.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Opposition protests</h2>



On Wednesday, the Congress and several opposition parties staged a protest in Parliament, demanding an apology from Shah for his remarks about Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar. Near Parliament&#8217;s Gate No. 1, MPs from Congress, DMK, and other opposition parties gathered to protest and raised slogans against the Home Minister&#8217;s comments. Opposition MPs chanted slogans like &#8220;Jai Bhim&#8221; and &#8220;Hindustan will not tolerate the insult of Babasaheb.&#8221; Congress MP Rahul Gandhi criticised Amit Shah&#8217;s speech, stating that it was in direct contradiction to the Constitution. He accused Shah of expressing intentions to alter the Constitution, which seeks to dismantle the legacy of Bhimrao Ambedkar and the foundational principles of the Constitution. The entire country is aware of this, according to Rahul Gandhi.

One Nation One Election20 BJP MPs Defy Party Whip, Face Action

BJP MP Action: Sources suggest that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may issue notices to approximately 20 of its MPs who were absent during the voting on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill in the Lok Sabha on (17 December). This is despite a whip being issued to all party MPs to ensure their presence in the House.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">One Nation, One Election Bill Introduced in Lok Sabha</h2>



The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, concerning simultaneous elections, was introduced in the Lok Sabha for the first time following e-voting. The motion was passed by a majority. 269 votes were cast in favour of the motion, while 198 were cast against it. The bill will now be sent to a joint parliamentary committee for comprehensive deliberation at all levels.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Manish Tewari Raises Concerns</h2>



Senior Congress leader and former minister, Manish Tewari, termed the bill unconstitutional. He argued that the basic structure, beyond Schedule 7, cannot be altered, and the bill under consideration is an attack on the Constitution.



He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the bill. Following Tewari’s opposition, several other opposition parties echoed the sentiment, claiming the bill violates the spirit of the Constitution. Prominent leaders including Samajwadi Party leader Dharmendra Yadav, TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee, DMK’s T.R. Baalu, and AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi, among others, opposed the bill.

This is despite a whip being issued to all party MPs to ensure their presence in the House.

Good News for Farmers: &#39;Send Rs 12,000 Instead of Rs 6,000 in Accounts&#39;

The Parliament Standing Committee on Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Food Processing has recommended renaming the Ministry of Agriculture and increasing the annual amount of the PM Kisan Nidhi Yojana from Rs 6,000 to Rs12,000.



The committee, chaired by Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi, presented its report on Tuesday in Parliament on the demand for grants for 2024-25. The committee stated that the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare should be renamed the Department of Agriculture, Farmers and Agricultural Labour Welfare, recognising the role of agricultural labourers. It recommended that the benefits of seasonal incentives given to farmers should also be extended to sharecroppers and agricultural labourers. Mandatory crop insurance for small farmers has been recommended. The committee stated that farmers with land holdings up to two hectares should receive the benefits of crop insurance on the lines of the central government&#8217;s Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. It further recommended the speedy establishment of a National Minimum Livelihood Wage Commission for agricultural labourers to ensure they receive their pending entitlements.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Need to Grant Legal Status to MSP</h2>



The report stated that the proper implementation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) is crucial for agricultural reforms and farmers&#8217; welfare. The committee suggested that a legally binding MSP should be implemented to provide farmers with economic stability. The committee recommended launching a loan waiver scheme for farmers and agricultural labourers, along with increasing the budget of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

Indian Railways has categorically denied all reports claiming free travel for passengers during the Maha Kumbh Mela, terming such reports as “baseless and misleading”. A statement from Indian Railways said, “It has come to the notice of Indian Railways that some media outlets are circulating reports claiming that free travel will be allowed to passengers during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Indian Railways categorically denies these reports as they are completely baseless and misleading.”



The railway reminded passengers that travelling without a valid ticket is “strictly prohibited” and a punishable offence. The statement added, “There is no provision for free travel during the Maha Kumbh Mela or any other occasion.” They also informed people that adequate arrangements have been made considering the increased number of passengers during the mela.



The railway statement said, “Adequate arrangements are being made, including the establishment of special holding areas, additional ticket counters, and other necessary facilities to manage the anticipated influx of passengers.” They added, “Indian Railways is committed to ensuring seamless travel for passengers during the Maha Kumbh Mela.” 



Meanwhile, the Chief Public Relations Officer of North Central Railway, Shashikant Tripathi, announced that Indian Railways is eliminating 21 level-crossing gates in Prayagraj to ensure smooth traffic movement. Under the major infrastructure revamp, 21 level-crossing gates are being eliminated at a cost of approximately ₹450 crore. Tripathi said, “21 LC (level-crossing) gates are being prepared at a cost of around ₹450 crore. 15 of these gates are ready and the rest will be completed by December.”

UPSC Motivation: A young woman from a small village in Sawai Madhopur district, Rajasthan, has become a young IAS officer, bringing immense joy to her family. Meanwhile, former Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara believes that changing the batting order of the Indian captain is disrupting his rhythm. Notably, Rohit Sharma is now batting at number 6 instead of opening. He missed the first match of the series due to personal reasons. After failing in both innings of the second Test match, he failed again in another innings. Pujara believes that batting in the middle order instead of opening can affect a player&#8217;s momentum.



Commenting on Rohit&#8217;s latest dismissal, Pujara said, &#8220;It wasn&#8217;t a length ball that you could drive. Even driving a full-length ball isn&#8217;t easy here. Rohit was trying to punch the ball; he should have defended it. He&#8217;s not scoring runs at the moment, which is putting pressure on him.&#8221; Pujara further added that Rohit used to be an opener, but now he&#8217;s batting at number 6. &#8220;Doing so doesn&#8217;t help you with your batting; it doesn&#8217;t help you find your rhythm,&#8221; he stated.



Following Rohit&#8217;s early dismissal in the match, excellent batting performances from KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja propelled India&#8217;s score past 200. A half-century partnership between KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja was witnessed. Veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon ended this partnership, having Rahul caught by Steve Smith for 84 runs. Rahul&#8217;s innings of 139 balls included 8 fours. Pat Cummins dismissed Ravindra Jadeja for 77 runs. Jadeja&#8217;s innings of 123 balls included 7 fours and 1 six.



Subsequently, Jasprit Bumrah (10) and Akash Deep (27) added a crucial 39 runs for the last wicket, saving India from the follow-on. Currently, the rain-affected match seems to be heading towards a draw. Australia will therefore attempt to quickly dismiss the Indian innings and bat rapidly to force India into a quick fourth innings.
