<p>Voting commenced at 11:20 AM and concluded at 12:19 PM in the Assembly Hall of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.</p>



<p>The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation comprises 35 members, including elected councillors and the Member of Parliament for Chandigarh, who have voting rights as an ex-officio member.</p>



<p><strong>Before the election, the seat distribution was as follows:</strong> AAP had 13 councillors, Congress had 6, BJP had 16, and the Chandigarh MP (Congress) held 1 vote. A few days before the election, Congress councillor Gurbakhsh Rawat joined the BJP, increasing the party&#8217;s number to 17.</p>



<p>The election was conducted through a secret ballot. Nominated councillor Ramnik Singh Bedi was appointed as the presiding officer, and retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Jaishree Thakur was appointed as an independent observer by the Supreme Court to oversee the elections. The Supreme Court also directed that videography of the election proceedings be conducted.</p>

<p><strong>Maha Kumbh Stampede:</strong> A stampede occurred late at night at the Sangam confluence during the second and largest <em>Amrit Snan</em> of Mauni Amavasya at the Mahakumbh. According to the administration, 30 people died in this incident, while 60 were injured. The question is, where did this lapse occur when the administration and police kept claiming preparedness?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Seven Crore and Fifty Lakh People Took the Holy Bath</h2>



<p>By 6 pm on Mauni Amavasya, 7.64 crore devotees had taken a bath. Until 28 January, approximately 19.94 crore people had bathed in the Sangam. Police and administrative officers claimed preparedness, but a small oversight led to this tragedy. Let&#8217;s understand the five major reasons behind this incident…</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Millions of Devotees Sent from Holding Areas Towards the Sangam</h2>



<p>Eighty-four holding areas were created in the Mahakumbh area to control the crowd, but these were perhaps not utilised. When devotees were sitting in Kali Marg parking and other places on Tuesday night, the police started moving them towards the Sangam. As a result, the crowd that gathered at the Sangam from nine o&#8217;clock onwards remained seated for the <em>Amrit</em> Snan.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">One-Way Plan for Entry and Exit at the Sangam Failed</h2>



<p>A one-way plan was made for all the baths at the Sangam. Devotees were to go from Kali Road, cross the Triveni Dam, and reach the Sangam nose via the Sangam upper route, and exit via the Akshayvat route and Triveni Dam to the Triveni route. However, this plan appeared to fail. Very few people used the Akshayvat route. People continued to come and go on the Sangam upper route.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Uncontrolled Crowd Due to Pontoon Bridges Remaining Closed</h2>



<p>Thirty pontoon bridges were constructed to facilitate the movement of devotees in the Mela area, but 12 to 13 pontoon bridges were kept closed. If a devotee comes to the Sangam from the Jhunsi side, they have to walk several kilometres. Most elderly pilgrims get tired and sit for a long time at the Sangam nose. This led to a build-up of crowds at the Sangam.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Situation Worsened Due to Administrative Arbitrariness</h2>



<p>The roads in the Mahakumbh area widened considerably, but they remained closed most of the time. In addition, barricading was done on the main route, which caused devotees to walk continuously. People got tired and sat down on the banks of the Sangam. This also contributed to the crowd at the Sangam.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CISF Company Stationed in Sector Number 10</h2>



<p>The administration deployed numerous forces in the Mahakumbh area for relief and rescue operations, but they were not deployed in different sectors. A CISF company was stationed in Sector Number 10. When the stampede occurred late at night, the CISF company was called. It took the company considerable time to reach Sector 3 from Sector 10 through the crowd, worsening the situation.</p>

<p>Veteran Australian opener Usman Khawaja has achieved a significant milestone, scoring a double-century against Sri Lanka. Khawaja has become only the second Australian player over the age of 38 to score a double century in Test cricket, joining the legendary Donald Bradman. Khawaja completed his maiden double century in Test cricket on the second day of the first match of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka in Galle on Thursday. He scored 234 runs in Galle, making it his first double-century in Test cricket and also the highest Test score by an Australian batsman on Sri Lankan soil.</p>

<p>Furthermore, he became the first Australian to score a double century in Asia since Jason Gillespie&#8217;s famous unbeaten 201 against Bangladesh in 2006. Other players to have scored double centuries in Tests include Matthew Hayden (201 not out against India in Chennai), Dean Jones (210 against India in a drawn Test in Madras in 1986), Greg Chappell (235 against Pakistan in Faisalabad in 1980), and Mark Taylor (334 not out against Pakistan in Peshawar in 1998).</p>

<p>Udaipur: Scolding and condemning children before they have a chance to explain themselves is creating stress and resentment in children. Ignoring their positive and negative behaviours leads to depression.</p>



<p>Furthermore, restricting children from playing with others, and teachers targeting them at school for poor academic performance are pushing children into depression. Sometimes, these children even resort to suicide. This reality has emerged during counselling sessions at the Ujala Clinic, run at the RNT Medical College&#8217;s paediatric hospital.</p>



<p>Looking at the clinic&#8217;s data over two years, research was conducted on 6,000 stressed adolescents (children aged 10 to 14) at the paediatric hospital. Most children underwent counselling after two to three check-ups. During this time, the children revealed several reasons directly linked to their parents.</p>



<p>Counsellor Vinod Kumari and Dr. Anuradha Sanadiya&#8217;s team also investigated the children&#8217;s families. Most children came from single-parent families. The number of children from joint families was negligible, but those with interaction with grandparents were generally normal.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Case One: Repeated Chest Pain</h2>



<p>A student was hospitalised due to repeated chest pain. Three check-ups revealed normal reports. Counselling revealed that he felt targeted by a teacher at school. He tried to tell his family several times, but no one listened, leading to his stress.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Case Two: Stealing Money from Home</h2>



<p>A female student came into contact with outsider students living in the neighbourhood. These students got her addicted to drugs. She then started stealing money from home and lying to get money for drugs. Her family never paid attention to her actions. She attempted suicide when she couldn&#8217;t get drugs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ages 10 to 14: 6 Reasons</h2>

Therefore, arrangements such as crowd management, deployment of security forces, a synchronised timetable, and healthcare services are crucial during these events. The Kumbh Mela and Hajj pilgrimage also demonstrate the need to provide pilgrims with proper guidelines and safety training so they can protect themselves and others.</p>

Kashi Vishwanath Temple Darshan: A Flood of Devotees in January 2025


<p>A massive influx of devotees visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in January 2025. According to figures released by the temple administration, a total of 65,90,707 devotees visited to pay their respects to Baba Vishwanath between 11 January and 28 January 2025. The temple witnessed particularly large crowds around Makar Sankranti and Republic Day.</p>

<p>Given the continuously increasing number of devotees at Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham, the temple administration, local administration, and police force remained on high alert. Special barricading, control rooms, and CCTV surveillance were used for crowd management at the temple.</p>

<p>On 27 January, the highest number of devotees, 6,55,878, visited the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Over 5.5 lakh devotees also visited on 25 and 26 January, creating a festive atmosphere in Kashi.</p>

GATE Exam: 1st and 2nd February&#39;s GATE and JAM Exams Shifted to New Centers in Lucknow Instead of Prayagraj, See Notice


<p><strong>GATE Exam Centre Changed:</strong> IIT Roorkee is conducting the GATE 2025 exam on 1 &amp; 2 February and 15 &amp; 16 February. IIT Delhi has announced a change of exam centres for candidates who were to appear for the entrance exam in Prayagraj. Due to the Mahakumbh, the GATE 2025 exams scheduled for 1 &amp; 2 February and the JAM 2025 exam scheduled for 2 February in Prayagraj will now be held in Lucknow. However, the dates remain unchanged.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exam to be held in Lucknow instead of Prayagraj</h2>



<p>IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi stated in a release that they received numerous applications from candidates expressing difficulty in reaching exam centres in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh (UP), due to expected large crowds. The Mahakumbh is expected to draw massive crowds on 1 and 2 February. Therefore, the Prayagraj exam centres for the GATE and JAM exams have been shifted to Lucknow.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Download Admit Cards</h2>



<p>GATE and JAM admit cards have been released. Candidates are advised to download their admit cards from the GOAPS portal – goaps.iitr.ac.in/login – for GATE 2025 and the JOAPS portal – joaps.iitd.ac.in/login – for JAM 2025. Entry to the examination hall will not be permitted without an admit card. All candidates must bring their photo ID, as uploaded in the online application form and mentioned on the admit card, for identification purposes. Carefully check the details of the new exam centre while downloading the admit card.</p>

<p>Plane crashes are on the rise globally, with incidents occurring frequently in various locations. One such incident took place on Wednesday in South Sudan. The accident occurred in the morning in Unity State, South Sudan, when a small aircraft belonging to the Chinese oil firm Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC) carrying several passengers crashed en route to the nation&#8217;s capital, Juba. This plane crash was reported by Gatwech Bipal, the Information Minister of Unity State.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">20 People Killed</h2>



<p>The plane crash in South Sudan on Wednesday involved 21 people. 20 of them perished. The deceased comprised 16 South Sudanese nationals, two Chinese nationals, and one Indian national. All were employees of Greater Pioneer Operating Company.</p>

<p>According to reports, the plane crashed approximately 500 metres from the runway in Unity State, shortly after taking off for Juba at approximately 10:30 am local time. <p><strong>Delhi Assembly Elections:</strong> Launching his election campaign for the upcoming Delhi elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed confidence in his party&#8217;s victory, stating that on February 5th, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will go, and the Bharatiya Janata Party will take over. He said, &#8220;The entire Delhi is saying, on February 5th, &#8216;AAP-da&#8217; will go, and BJP will come.&#8221;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">‘AAP-da’s Lies Won’t Work Anymore: Modi</h2>



<p>Addressing a public rally in the Ghondha Assembly constituency, PM Modi targeted the ruling AAP in Delhi, stating that the area&#8217;s residents want a government that will free them from tanker mafias and provide them with tap water. He said, &#8220;The scene here reflects Delhi&#8217;s mood; it reflects the mandate of the people of Delhi. Delhi is saying that there will be no more excuses, false promises, loot, and the lies of ‘AAP-da’ will not work anymore. I congratulate the Delhi BJP. They have presented a tremendous manifesto. It promises schemes for everyone in Delhi, including women, youth, the middle class, auto drivers, shopkeepers, and slum dwellers.&#8221;</p>



<p>The BJP government, to be formed after February 8th, will fulfill all its promises within a definite timeframe. This is Modi&#8217;s guarantee. Commenting on Delhi&#8217;s condition, PM Modi targeted AAP, stating that crores of citizens in the country are working towards a developed India. But Delhi does not look like the developed capital of the country. There is a need for the capital of a developed India to become a model developed city. Looking at Delhi&#8217;s deterioration, can you say that Delhi is the capital of a modern state? Does it look like a capital? I don&#8217;t need anyone to answer. Crores of citizens of Delhi always speak about their problems.</p>

<p>Appealing to the people of Delhi to vote for the BJP, PM Modi sought a chance to work for their welfare and development.
