Varanasi gangrape case: IPS Chandrakant Meena removed


<p><strong>Police Action:</strong> A graduation student in Varanasi was gang-raped by 23 boys for seven days. On 3 April, the boys abandoned her on the street and fled. The traumatised student reached home and reported the incident. Police have so far arrested 13 out of the 23 accused.</p>



<p>On Friday morning, when PM Modi arrived in Varanasi, he immediately sought an update on the gang-rape case from Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal upon landing at the airport. He also expressed displeasure at the negligence, demanding strict action against all culprits. Action has now begun. Following the Prime Minister&#8217;s displeasure, Varanasi&#8217;s DCP Varuna Chandrakant Meena was removed from his post on Monday night.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3 to 4 More Police Officials May Face Action</h2>



<p>Sources say Chandrakant Meena did not take strict action on the day of the incident, nor did he file a report against the negligent Station House Officer and Sub-Inspector. This caused dissatisfaction among senior officials, leading to this action. Sources say that action may be taken against 3 to 4 more police officials involved in this case in the coming days.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Who is Chandrakant Meena?</h2>



<p>IPS Chandrakant Meena is a 2018-batch officer. He hails from Alwar, Rajasthan. He has been in Varanasi since 2022. He was made ADCP Kashi Zone in 2023, followed by the responsibility of DCP Crime in the same year. In an administrative reshuffle, he was given the charge of DCP Varuna Zone and has remained in Varanasi since then.</p>



<p>Chandrakant Meena holds a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering. Meena also received the DG Silver Medal in 2023. Before Varanasi, Meena served as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Bareilly, where he took action against land mafias. Following action under the Gangster Act against the directors of Alliance Builders, property worth ₹35.11 crore was seized.</p>

International Cyber Gang Busted in Rajasthan


<p><strong>Jaipur:</strong> Mandawa police in Jhunjhunu District, Rajasthan, have achieved a major breakthrough, uncovering an international cyber fraud ring operating from a hotel on Fatehpur bypass. The ring comprised 13 accused, including three women. Police seized 21 laptops, 21 mobile phones, and other electronic equipment from the scene.</p>



<p>Under the direction of Superintendent of Police Sharad Choudhary, the operation revealed that the accused posed as Microsoft employees, falsely claiming to be based in Washington, USA. They contacted US citizens, claiming to resolve technical issues related to Microsoft. Under this pretext, they tricked victims into downloading remote access apps like &#8220;Ultra Viewer&#8221; onto their computers. Once access was gained, they stole personal data and committed cyber fraud.</p>



<p>The accused used tools like &#8220;iBeam,&#8221; &#8220;Micro SIP,&#8221; &#8220;Turbo VPN,&#8221; and others to transfer calls, hack systems, and access victims&#8217; bank details. Those arrested hail from Manipur, Nagaland, Darjeeling, Delhi, and Mizoram.</p>



<p>Police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections of the IT Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). A thorough investigation is underway to determine the total amount of money defrauded. Constable Vikram Singh played a significant role in this operation.</p>


<p>Under the guise of resolving technical issues related to Microsoft, members of the gang contacted US citizens, tricking them into downloading remote access apps like &#8220;Ultra Viewer&#8221; onto their computers. They then accessed the systems and stole private data, perpetrating cyber fraud.</p>

<p>The war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas continues. <p>Israel has presented a ceasefire proposal to Egypt for Gaza. This proposal suggests a 45-day temporary ceasefire in Gaza, in exchange for Hamas releasing approximately half of the hostages they hold. This ceasefire would also pave the way for negotiations towards a permanent truce. Egypt has been mediating the conflict from the outset, which is why Israel submitted the proposal to them, who have subsequently passed it on to Hamas.</p>

This is CSK&#8217;s second win of the season, and Dhoni was awarded the Player of the Match for his performance. This is his first Player of the Match award in six years, making him the oldest player in IPL history to achieve this feat. He was visibly surprised upon receiving the award.</p>

<p>Dhoni broke Praveen Tambe&#8217;s record. Tambe won this title at 43 years and 60 days, while Dhoni achieved this milestone at 43 years and 281 days. <p>He further added, &#8220;It was a difficult match. If you look at the power play, whether it&#8217;s the combination or the conditions, we were struggling with the ball. Then, as a batting unit, we couldn&#8217;t get the start we wanted. We kept losing wickets at the wrong time. One reason is that the Chennai wicket is a bit slow. When we&#8217;ve played away from home, the batting unit has performed a bit better. Maybe we need to play on a bit better wickets, so that the batsmen get the confidence to play their shots. <p><strong>Petrol Pump License:</strong> The Chhattisgarh government has taken a significant step by eliminating the state-level licensing requirement for petroleum retail outlets, commonly known as petrol pumps. A notification to this effect was issued by the Food Department on 14 November 2024. Now, businesses will only need to comply with the regulations of the central Petroleum Act to open a petrol pump. The previous dual approval process has been removed, simplifying the procedure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Changed and Why It Is Important</h2>



<p>Previously, to establish a petrol pump, businesses had to obtain a purchase and sale license from the Food Department through the Collector. Petrol pump license renewal was required annually or triennially. The dual approval process, involving both state and central governments, consumed significant time, money, and increased paperwork.</p>



<p>Now, compliance with only central regulations will suffice. This will provide relief to businesses and make the process of opening petrol pumps faster and cheaper. This move is a significant step towards promoting business and simplifying regulations in Chhattisgarh.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Businesses Will Benefit</h2>



<p>Reduced paperwork and single-level approvals will allow for quicker establishment of petrol pumps. New businesses, especially small entrepreneurs and oil companies, will be able to start operations without significant hassle. Fraud in Rajasthan over hotel bookings! FIR against OYO founder Ritesh Agarwal for cheating over ₹22 crore


<p><strong>Jaipur: </strong>Hotel operators in Jaipur have accused Oyo Rooms, an online hotel booking company, of making fraudulent bookings at their hotels. By creating these fake bookings, Oyo inflated its earnings, but this has resulted in hotels facing tax recovery, penalties, and interest charges amounting to crores of rupees from the GST department.</p>



<p>They are running from pillar to post dealing with the department. One hotel has filed an FIR against Oyo company director Ritesh Agarwal at Adarshnagar police station. Hussain Khan, President of the Hotel Federation of Rajasthan, described this unusual case as a growing problem for the hotel industry. Meanwhile, Sandeep Gogia, the convenor, stated that 100 hotels have received GST notices.</p>



<p>In Jodhpur too, in the last six months, more than 10 hotel operators have received notices from SGST and CGST. It was revealed that large-scale fraud occurred in the name of booking and then cancelling hotel rooms. One hotel even received a notice for approximately ₹1 crore. Hotels are booked online and then immediately cancelled. A GST charge is levied for this, which the hotel operators have to bear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hotel Didn&#8217;t Exist in 2016, Yet Bookings Shown</h2>

<p>Madan Jain, director of Samskara Resort, stated that Oyo showed bookings totalling ₹22.51 crore at their resort. Because of this, the GST department has demanded payment of ₹2.66 crore. Notably, Oyo showed bookings at Samskara even in 2016, when the hotel did not even exist.</p>

<p>Nitin, the operator of Kartikeya Hotel, said that the GST department showed earnings of ₹44 crore for 2023-24. A recovery notice of ₹4 crore has been received.</p>
