GATE Exam: 1st and 2nd February&#39;s GATE and JAM Exams Shifted to New Centers in Lucknow Instead of Prayagraj, See Notice


<p><strong>GATE Exam Centre Changed:</strong> IIT Roorkee is conducting the GATE 2025 exam on 1 &amp; 2 February and 15 &amp; 16 February. IIT Delhi has announced a change of exam centres for candidates who were to appear for the entrance exam in Prayagraj. Due to the Mahakumbh, the GATE 2025 exams scheduled for 1 &amp; 2 February and the JAM 2025 exam scheduled for 2 February in Prayagraj will now be held in Lucknow. However, the dates remain unchanged.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exam to be held in Lucknow instead of Prayagraj</h2>



<p>IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi stated in a release that they received numerous applications from candidates expressing difficulty in reaching exam centres in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh (UP), due to expected large crowds. The Mahakumbh is expected to draw massive crowds on 1 and 2 February. Therefore, the Prayagraj exam centres for the GATE and JAM exams have been shifted to Lucknow.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Download Admit Cards</h2>



<p>GATE and JAM admit cards have been released. Candidates are advised to download their admit cards from the GOAPS portal – goaps.iitr.ac.in/login – for GATE 2025 and the JOAPS portal – joaps.iitd.ac.in/login – for JAM 2025. Entry to the examination hall will not be permitted without an admit card. All candidates must bring their photo ID, as uploaded in the online application form and mentioned on the admit card, for identification purposes. Carefully check the details of the new exam centre while downloading the admit card.</p>

<p><strong>U19 Women&#8217;s T20 World Cup 2025, IND vs ENG Highlights:</strong> India defeated England by 9 wickets in the second semi-final of the ICC Under 19 Women&#8217;s T20 World Cup 2025, played at the Bay Oval on Friday. Batting first, England scored 113 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. India chased down the target of 114 runs with the loss of just 1 wicket, securing their place in the final for the second consecutive time. The defending champions will now face South Africa in the final on February 2nd. India had won the inaugural edition of this tournament.</p>



<p>At the Bay Oval in Kuala Lumpur, the England captain won the toss and elected to bat first. England started cautiously, but Parunika Sisodia provided India with their first breakthrough, dismissing Jemimah Spence for 37. Sisodia then struck again in the same over, removing Trudi Johnson for 0. Opener Davina Perrin found a partnership with captain Abbie Norgrave, taking the team&#8217;s score past 80. Ayushi Shukla then dismissed both Perrin and Norgrave at 86, giving India four quick wickets.</p>



<p>After this, no other England batter could make a significant contribution, and the team managed to reach only 113 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs. For India, Parunika Sisodia and Vaishnavi Sharma took 3 wickets each, while Ayushi Shukla claimed 2.</p>



<p>Chasing a target of 114, India started aggressively, with both openers providing an excellent start. Wicket-keeper batter Kamalini and Trisha put on a 60-run partnership for the first wicket. They had taken India to 44 without loss in just 6 overs, significantly boosting India&#8217;s chances of reaching the final. After Trisha&#8217;s dismissal, Sonika Chalke partnered with Kamalini, ensuring no further setbacks for the team. India comfortably reached the target of 114 runs in 15 overs, losing only one wicket. India will now face South Africa in the final on February 2nd. South Africa defeated Australia in the first semi-final.</p>

<p><strong>Economic Survey 2025 Live Updates:</strong> The Budget Session of Parliament commenced today, with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of both Houses. Following her address, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Economic Survey in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. </p>



<p>President Murmu said, &#8220;My government believes in women-led development in the country. The government&#8217;s goal is to create 3 crore &#8216;Lakhpati Didis&#8217;. It is a matter of great pride for the Parliament that today, a large number of women are flying fighter jets, joining the police, and also leading corporations in the country. Our daughters are bringing pride to the nation by winning Olympic medals. To ensure that the entire country can see the potential of the eight states in the North East, the first Ashtalakshmi Festival was organised.&#8221;</p>



<p>President Droupadi Murmu said that after the abrogation of Article 370, there has been significant change in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. She also mentioned that the government has worked towards eliminating the feeling of separatism in the North Eastern states. President Murmu stated, &#8220;The first Ashtalakshmi Festival was organised to enable the entire country to witness the potential of the eight states in the North East.&#8221;</p>



<p>President Murmu said, &#8220;The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project has been completed, and now the country will be connected by a railway line from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.&#8221; She further added, &#8220;The country&#8217;s aviation sector is progressing rapidly, and airline companies are placing orders for 1,700 new aircraft.&#8221;</p>



<p>President Droupadi Murmu said, &#8220;The government has launched the &#8216;India AI Mission&#8217; to advance India&#8217;s contribution in the field of artificial intelligence.&#8221; Appreciating the progress in the space industry, the President stated, &#8220;The day is not far when India will launch its own human spaceflight, Gaganyaan.&#8221;</p>

Punjab: Bodies Strewn on Road After Bolero-Canter Crash


<p>A major road accident occurred on Friday in Firozpur, Punjab. A horrific collision took place between a Bolero pickup and a canter near Mohan Uttar village in Firozpur. Ten people died in this accident, and several others were seriously injured. The injured have been admitted to the hospital with the help of ambulances. Screams and cries erupted at the scene of the accident. Locals came forward to help and informed the police. Police officials arrived at the scene as soon as they received information about the accident.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Chaos Among the Families of the Deceased</h2>



<p>The incident occurred on the Firozpur-Fazilka road in the district. A long traffic jam ensued on the highway after the accident. The police removed the damaged vehicles and cleared the National Highway of stranded vehicles. A Road Safety Force team also reached the scene. The police are currently investigating the matter. The families of the deceased are in a state of shock and grief following the accident.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">High Speed Proved Fatal</h2>



<p>Inspector Jaswinder Singh Baraṛ, who is investigating the accident, said that Road Safety Force (SSF) teams reached the scene as soon as they received information about the incident. All the injured have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. After clearing the heavy traffic jam, the police cleared the National Highway. Eyewitnesses reported that the pickup was carrying many people and was travelling at a high speed. Suddenly, the vehicle went out of control, and a canter approaching from behind at high speed collided with it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Deceased Were Set to Work as Waiters at Weddings</h2>



<p>The Police Inspector stated that labourers were in the Bolero pickup. They were all going from Firozpur towards the rural areas. During this time, the pickup went out of control and collided with a canter coming from behind. Upon reaching the hospital, doctors declared more than five people dead. People present at the scene say that all those in the Bolero pickup worked as waiters at weddings.</p>

Economic Survey: Key to Budget 2025, Its Significance and History


<p><strong>Economic Survey:</strong> The wait for Budget 2025 is over. The NDA government, led by Narendra Modi, is scheduled to present the Economic Survey in Parliament on Friday afternoon. As per tradition, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the pre-budget detailed document outlining the state of the economy for the upcoming fiscal year 2025-26, a day before the Budget is presented. The Economic Survey will be presented in the Lok Sabha at noon and in the Rajya Sabha at 2 pm.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What is the Economic Survey?</h2>



<p>All eyes will be on the key announcements and the government&#8217;s long-term economic roadmap for the remaining tenure of Modi 3.0. Prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance and overseen by the Chief Economic Advisor, the Economic Survey document provides an overview of the economy and various indicators for 2024-25 (April-March) and some perspectives for the next fiscal year. The Economic Survey document may also provide insights into the actual Budget 2025-26, to be presented on Saturday.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">When was the Economic Survey introduced?</h2>



<p>According to reports, the first Economic Survey came into existence in 1950-51. At that time, it used to be part of the budget documents. In the 1960s, it was separated from the budget documents and has been presented a day before the Union Budget since then.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Previous Themes of the Economic Survey</h2>



<p>The theme of the Economic Survey plays a significant role each year. In 2022, the theme of the Economic Survey was &#8216;Agile Approach&#8217;. It highlighted India&#8217;s economic response to the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, in 2023, its theme was &#8216;Recovery Complete&#8217;. In 2024, the Economic Survey focused on economic resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Nirmala Sitharaman to Create a New Record</h2>



<p>Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will set a record on February 1st for presenting the most consecutive Union Budgets. This will be Sitharaman&#8217;s 8th budget as Finance Minister, including six annual and two interim budgets. Nirmala Sitharaman has surpassed the record of former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who presented five annual budgets and one interim budget between 1959 and 1964 as Finance Minister.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Budget Session 2025 (Budget Session)</h2>



<p>Parliament&#8217;s Budget Session will commence on January 31st and will conclude on April 4th as per the scheduled programme. The budget speech will outline the government&#8217;s fiscal policies, revenue and expenditure proposals, tax reforms, and other significant announcements.<br>President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on January 31st. Parliament will have an inter-session recess from February 14th, and both Houses will resume their sittings on March 10th.</p>

NASA Mission: Indian Air Force Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla to Become First Indian Astronaut on ISS


<p><strong>NASA Mission:</strong> Indian Space Agency ISRO astronaut and Indian Air Force officer Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will be piloting Axiom Mission-4 or AX-4, a 14-day mission to the International Space Station (ISS) from NASA&#8217;s Kennedy Space Center this year. This mission is a private NASA mission. Previously, Shubhanshu Shukla was also selected for India&#8217;s ambitious space mission &#8216;Gaganyaan&#8217;. In this mission, Shubhanshu has been selected as the pilot.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Announcement Date</h2>



<p>NASA announced during a press conference on Thursday that Shubhanshu has been selected for this mission. All four astronauts going on the mission were also present at the conference.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Who is Shubhanshu Shukla?</h2>



<p>39-year-old Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who has flown fighter aircraft such as Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier and An-32, was born on 10 October 1985 in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. He received his commission in the fighter wing of the Indian Air Force in 2006. He was promoted to the rank of Group Captain in March 2024. Shukla is an experienced test pilot with over 2,000 flight hours. Shubhanshu Shukla has also been selected as an astronaut for India&#8217;s ambitious human space mission Gaganyaan.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Shubhanshu Shukla Discusses the Mission</h2>



<p>In the press conference, pilot Shubhanshu mentioned that he would be taking some Indian food with him and would share it with his colleagues. He said, &#8216;I am very excited to go into microgravity and experience space flight on my own.&#8217; I think we are at a stage where all things are materialising.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ESA Project Astronauts to Participate</h2>



<p>The mission will also include Poland&#8217;s Project Astronaut, Wojciech Zbigniew Wiszniweski , and Tibor Káposzta from Hungary, as mission specialists from the ESA (European Space Agency). Dana Weigel, International Space Station Program Manager at NASA&#8217;s Johnson Space Center in Houston, expressed her excitement about this private astronaut mission.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Yoga in Space</h2>



<p>Group Captain Shukla will also be practising yoga during his space journey. He stated that when we are on the ground, we need to practice so that we have a healthy body with a healthy mind and we can complete this mission with our full spirit. It is noteworthy that India&#8217;s first astronaut, Rakesh Sharma, also performed yoga in space. Shukla said that he is very excited about this mission.</p>

<p>In the first part of <em>Ashram</em>, it was seen that Pammi accused Baba of misconduct, but Baba Nirala uses his powerful connections to turn the entire case around, and Pammi ends up in jail. Meanwhile, Pammi is in jail, and her mother, who is hospitalised, dies. After this, Baba Nirala orders the DIG to withdraw all charges against Pammi. <p><strong>CSIR UGC NET December 2024:</strong> The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the dates for the CSIR UGC NET December 2024 examination. The exam will be held between 28 February and 2 March 2024. The released schedule can be downloaded from the official website, <a href="csirnet.nta.ac.in">csirnet.nta.ac.in</a>. Candidates will have the option to choose their preferred language, Hindi or English, during the application process. Successful candidates will be eligible for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), can apply for Assistant Professor positions, and will be eligible for PhD admission.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CSIR UGC NET December 2024: Computer-Based Test</h2>



<p>This examination will be conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode and will be held in two shifts. The first shift will be from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and the second shift from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The exam will be three hours long.</p>

<p>Voting commenced at 11:20 AM and concluded at 12:19 PM in the Assembly Hall of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.</p>



<p>The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation comprises 35 members, including elected councillors and the Member of Parliament for Chandigarh, who have voting rights as an ex-officio member.</p>



<p><strong>Before the election, the seat distribution was as follows:</strong> AAP had 13 councillors, Congress had 6, BJP had 16, and the Chandigarh MP (Congress) held 1 vote. A few days before the election, Congress councillor Gurbakhsh Rawat joined the BJP, increasing the party&#8217;s number to 17.</p>



<p>The election was conducted through a secret ballot. Nominated councillor Ramnik Singh Bedi was appointed as the presiding officer, and retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Jaishree Thakur was appointed as an independent observer by the Supreme Court to oversee the elections. The Supreme Court also directed that videography of the election proceedings be conducted.</p>

Maha Kumbh Stampede: Five Key Reasons Behind the Tragedy


<p><strong>Maha Kumbh Stampede:</strong> A stampede occurred late at night at the Sangam confluence during the second and largest <em>Amrit Snan</em> of Mauni Amavasya at the Mahakumbh. According to the administration, 30 people died in this incident, while 60 were injured. The question is, where did this lapse occur when the administration and police kept claiming preparedness?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Seven Crore and Fifty Lakh People Took the Holy Bath</h2>



<p>By 6 pm on Mauni Amavasya, 7.64 crore devotees had taken a bath. Until 28 January, approximately 19.94 crore people had bathed in the Sangam. Police and administrative officers claimed preparedness, but a small oversight led to this tragedy. Let&#8217;s understand the five major reasons behind this incident…</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Millions of Devotees Sent from Holding Areas Towards the Sangam</h2>



<p>Eighty-four holding areas were created in the Mahakumbh area to control the crowd, but these were perhaps not utilised. When devotees were sitting in Kali Marg parking and other places on Tuesday night, the police started moving them towards the Sangam. As a result, the crowd that gathered at the Sangam from nine o&#8217;clock onwards remained seated for the <em>Amrit</em> Snan.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">One-Way Plan for Entry and Exit at the Sangam Failed</h2>



<p>A one-way plan was made for all the baths at the Sangam. Devotees were to go from Kali Road, cross the Triveni Dam, and reach the Sangam nose via the Sangam upper route, and exit via the Akshayvat route and Triveni Dam to the Triveni route. However, this plan appeared to fail. Very few people used the Akshayvat route. People continued to come and go on the Sangam upper route.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Uncontrolled Crowd Due to Pontoon Bridges Remaining Closed</h2>



<p>Thirty pontoon bridges were constructed to facilitate the movement of devotees in the Mela area, but 12 to 13 pontoon bridges were kept closed. If a devotee comes to the Sangam from the Jhunsi side, they have to walk several kilometres. Most elderly pilgrims get tired and sit for a long time at the Sangam nose. This led to a build-up of crowds at the Sangam.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Situation Worsened Due to Administrative Arbitrariness</h2>



<p>The roads in the Mahakumbh area widened considerably, but they remained closed most of the time. In addition, barricading was done on the main route, which caused devotees to walk continuously. People got tired and sat down on the banks of the Sangam. This also contributed to the crowd at the Sangam.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CISF Company Stationed in Sector Number 10</h2>



<p>The administration deployed numerous forces in the Mahakumbh area for relief and rescue operations, but they were not deployed in different sectors. A CISF company was stationed in Sector Number 10. When the stampede occurred late at night, the CISF company was called. It took the company considerable time to reach Sector 3 from Sector 10 through the crowd, worsening the situation.</p>
